Militia
Militia is one of the most basic, nevertheless interesting and useful units in the game. It is raised in villages when they reach normal wealth level and have sufficient population. Militia resides inside home villages, ready to repel any enemy at the gates. Moreover it will unite with friendly forces that camp in their village. This is an excellent tactics to strengthen village defenses and increase their chances of surviving diversions such as attacks by wolfpacks.

Militia is a basic unit without proper soldier training meaning it doesn't wear any armour. Its only equipment is a wooden shield and a spear. Therefore militia can not sustain much damage often able to inflict only a couple of blows. Still their weapons are very effective against not armoured opponents such as beasts.

Some of the units such as heroes and knights have the ability to withdraw militia from their home villages and join them to their stacks. In such cases village wealth is reduced, thus decreasing food income to their master castles which is not recommended at the frontier. Still there are many cases when this tactics is justified. One would be in the very beginning of the game, when even few units can help to rush a neutral castle or an opponent. Another possibility is to put militia to garrison castles where necessary thus allowing more advanced units to fulfill other duties. Note that even when militia is joined to regular armies, they can not be effectively used in offense as they become demoralized when not in range of friendly structures.

Militia is invisible in the woods and is able to find food there. This makes them an excellent choice to stack with archers to form light armies which can patrol borders hiding in the woods and create ambushes. Such stacks are very cost effective and are invaluable when there is a need to create numerical advantage. Certain units such as heroes and some of the knights can train militia to wear light armour which can then be equipped in castles. After that militia can fully match light infantry in combat.
