Royal griffins are the alphas among the griffins. Whenever a pack of griffins emerge, one of them is royal. Griffins are proud beasts and only the best of the dwarf species are allowed to ride them - heroes, champions and guards. 
Specially trained dwarf servants cover royal griffins with armour when there service begins. This allows them to be effective even against heavy infantry with archer support!
